CBI conducts raids to probe irregularities in ITBP selection

Dehradoon: The Central Bureau of Investigation

(CBI) registered a case against a former Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) official and his three departmental juniors on the charges of allegedly taking illegal gratification from the candidates for selection as Constables and Head Constables in the border force. The recruitment process was conducted at ITBP’s Dehradun headquarters and Bareily sub-headquarters on March 14.

The CBI team raided office and residential places of the alleged persons at Dehradun, Chandigarh, Bareily and Delhi on Saturday. According to CBI officials, former ITBP DIG (Dehradun) Satpal, Deputy Commandant NR Shimrey, Assistant Commandant Somnath and Head Constable Virendar Kumar were booked. The agency questioned the alleged persons and recorded their statements.

According to sources, “CBI team during its raids at Dehradun headquarters recovered some important documents. Satpal’s gunner Virendar Kumar is believed to be the architect of the rip-off. He is likely to be arrested soon.”

CBI official said all four, being the members of a selection committee to select 84 Constables and Head Constables through rankers’ selection process, in which Satpal was the Chairman, obtained illegal gratification from the candidates to favour them. Constables were allegedly promoted to head constable position during the selection process.

Kalam lays in stress on technological innovation

“Agriculture must be rejuvenated through value addition''

Former President A. P.J. Abdul Kalam on Sunday said new markets could be created through rural potential and employment that would give rise to public-private community partnerships and international partnerships.

Delivering the convocation address at the 32nd annual convocation of Anna University on Sunday, he said it was time that technological innovation was encouraged in our thinking to rejuvenate, in particular, agricultural and rural sector through value addition.

“I foresee possibilities of creating new markets through rural potential and employment, giving rise to interesting possibilities of Public-Private-community partnerships and international partnerships. Above all, we need effective policy alignments to suit the conditions. Also, scientists and technologists have to work in appropriate region-specific rural technologies to transform the Indian rural sector in a vibrant socio-economic entity,” Mr. Kalam said.

Noting that India was focusing on bringing sustainable development through rural and urban infrastructure for better and enhanced delivery of essential public services on time, and on reforming the financial system for better global integration and on a proactive regulatory system, he said the young graduands had a great opportunity of transforming India into an economically developed nation.

Talking on the theme ‘A sustainable development system for the nation,' he asked the fresh graduates to ensure that the applications of science and technology reached the most underprivileged population as more than 750 million people in India and three billion in the world were living in villages and hence any mission towards global prosperity and happiness had to be inclusive of the rural regions.

While urging Anna University to be get itself placed among the top four universities in the world, he asked the officials to create Anna University PURA (Providing Urban Amenities in Rural Areas), for complexes for 20 to 30 villages having over one lakh population.

Governor K. Rosaiah presided over the convocation.

    P. Mannar Jawahar, Vice Chancellor, Anna University, said ANUSAT, the indigenously designed and developed micro-satellite, had completed 15,283 orbits over 994 days on Sunday since its launch on April 20, 2009. Though its life was estimated to be two years, it was still orbiting successfully and was responding to commands from the ground station at MIT campus, Anna University.

In all 55,128 candidates were awarded degrees. They included A.K. George, who was mentored by Mr. Kalam for the last few years on the subject ‘Enhancing capabilities of mentally challenged children through information technology'.

    P. Palaniappan, Higher Education Minister asked the graduates to be job providers instead of job seekers and explained the various initiatives announced by the State government to increase the Gross Enrolment Ratio.

Aakash Aakash now 1.4 million orders for world's cheapest tablet in India

Indian students use "Aakash" in New Delhi in October (AFP/File, Prakash Singh)

NEW DELHI — The world's cheapest tablet computer has clocked 1.4 million bookings since it was put up for sale online two weeks ago in India, a spokeswoman told AFP on Tuesday.

Bookings for the long-awaited Aakash, pegged at 2,500 rupees ($41), began on December 14, two months after it was unveiled as the "computer for the masses" in India where millions struggle to fund their education.

Datawind, the British company contracted by the Indian government to manufacture Aakash, said it had been taken by surprise by the response in India, where Apple's iPad computers costs a minimum of $600.

"The current response is overwhelming," a spokeswoman at the company's New Delhi PR agency told AFP in an email that detailed the number of bookings made so far.

Datawind is now taking orders for an upgraded version, called Ubislate 7 for March, and it will establish three new factories in 2012 to cope with the rush of orders.

"We plan to produce 75,000 units per factory per month from around April," the spokeswoman said.

The Economic Times in its online edition said the makers had run out of stock of Aakash, which has a seven-inch (18-centimetre) touchscreen, Wi-Fi Internet function, a multimedia player and 180 minutes of battery power.

The business daily said with around 400,000 pre-sales bookings for the Aakash, sales of the device were more than sales for the entire Indian tablet market last year which numbered about 250,000-300,000 units.

The stylish, locally-made Aakash uses an Android 2.2 operating system and has an external 2GB storage card and two USB ports.

Critics had warned the device might struggle to live up to expectations with its limited 256-megabyte random access memory (RAM).

The price of what has been dubbed "the world's cheapest computer" should fall to $35 and could even be hammered down as low as $10, DataWind has said.

The Aakash is part of a push to increase the number of students in higher education and to give them the technological skills needed to further boost the country's recent rapid economic growth.
